Minnesota has long been known for its vibrant culinary scene and commitment to education, and this tradition of excellence was on full display at the National ProStart Invitational held last month in Baltimore. Our state was proudly represented by two outstanding teams: the culinary team from Shakopee High School and the management team from Elk River High School.
The Shakopee High School Culinary Team tantalized the taste buds of judges with a menu that was both innovative and reflective of global flavors. They kicked off their menu with a starter of mixed vegetable pakora, which offered a delightful fusion of crisp textures and savory tastes. The main course featured an Indian spiced sablefish, which the team cooked to flaky perfection and seasoned with a masterful blend of spices. For dessert, the team presented shrikhand, a creamy and aromatic finale to their culinary showcase.
This impressive menu earned Shakopee High School 13th place nationally, out of 48 competing teams. This remarkable achievement places them in the top third of all teams, a testament to their skill, dedication, and passion for the culinary arts.
In the management competition, Elk River High School’s team presented their restaurant concept, Urban Bubble. With a mission to provide an exceptional culinary experience while promoting environmental sustainability, Urban Bubble captured the imagination of all. Their hybrid food truck operation and use of recyclable materials underscored their commitment to a greener future while also acknowledging the Hong Kong roots of street food.
Elk River’s forward-thinking approach and business acumen secured them 3rd place nationally, distinguishing them among 48 teams. This outstanding placement highlights their innovative spirit and qualifies the team members for national scholarships, opening doors to further educational opportunities.
As we celebrate the achievements of these talented teams, we also applaud the Minnesota ProStart program, which continues to nurture the next generation of culinary and hospitality leaders. Through ProStart’s industry-backed curriculum, students gain practical skills and real-world experience, ensuring that they are well-prepared to make their mark in the industry.
The success of Shakopee and Elk River at the National ProStart Invitational is a clear indicator of the program’s effectiveness and the bright future that lies ahead for our students. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to both teams for their hard work and dedication. Their victories are not just personal triumphs but also a source of pride for the entire state of Minnesota.
